We are in Dorset, having spent the weekend at the Tolpuddle Festival and now enjoying a few days peace and quiet. Today, we went to Lyme Regis and had fish and chips on the beach. All of us? Well, nearly. J and C ate local pasties with chips and L ate battered cod and mushy peas. Not quite there, but a million miles from where we have been.
I know in the disciplined, determined world of Around The Dinner Table parents, letting her off the chips was perhaps conceding to Ed. But I wanted her to taste something else beside the white flakes of fish in crisp batter – I wanted her to taste joy. The kind of joy from sitting on a beach, in the sun, fending off seagulls and looking at waves, watching different people walk by or playing games. The joy of being normal, of being on holiday from school and perhaps Ed too. And she did it: slowly and with difficulty, but she did it. We are getting there
